The Meaning of Naepo

What does "Naepo" mean and where is it referring to?

"In Chungcheong-do Province, Naepo is the most splendid area.

About 80km northwest to Gongju lies the Gayasan Mountain.

The vast sea opens to its west, and a large pond is seated between it and a coastal village in Gyeonggi-do Province to its north.

There is a large pebble field to its north, while its faces the Oseosan Mountain to its south and this is a mountain extending from Gayasan.

The 10 villages situated around the Gayasan Mountain are collectively referred to Naepo." - From "Taengniji (Joseon geography book)" by Silhak scholar Yi Chung-hwan The 10 villages he was referring to were Hongju, Gyeolseong, Haemi, Seosan, Taean, Deoksan, Yesan, Sinchang, Myeoncheon and Dangjin. In the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the Naepo region included some 20 villages from Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do Province, governed by Hongju-mok (present-day Hongseong-gun) to Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do Province. Based on these records, we can infer that Naepo included most of the regions along the western coast of Chungcheong-do Province.
